Born in Pennsylvania, Popp grew up and attended school in Los Angeles, where he studied with California artist James Beal. It was under Beal’s tutelage that Popp learned the basics of painting and drawing. A move to the Ozarks shifted Popp’s focus to nature, from the rolling, tree-covered landscapes to meandering streams to the wildlife of the region. He worked first in oils, but shifting his medium to acrylic paints in recent years has dramatically changed the style of his work. “Acrylics have the immediacy of watercolor and the forgiveness of oils,” Popp said. “I can paint very quickly with acrylics in thin, fast washes or use the paints thickly in opaque applications to change compositions or cover up unwanted colors. They allow a free expression directly onto the paper because they dry extremely fast and can be over-painted almost immediately.”
